WHAT IS FRESH FIBRE?
Let’s take a short trip down nbn memory lane…
When the nbn first started rolling out across the country way back in 2011, customers were not offered the option to choose which technology they would be connected to. Most found themselves utilising Fibre to the Node (FTTN) or Fibre to the Curb (FTTC) connections. Both of these technologies still today rely heavily on the old, deteriorating copper telephone network, which can adversely affect the stability and speeds achieved.
Fast forward to year 2022, NBN Co has recently started the process of extending the fibre directly to 3.5 million homes and business across the country via their Fibre Connect program. Known as Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) – or, as we like to call it, Fresh Fibre. This technology provides much higher speeds and stability as slow internet is (to borrow slang from the early naughties) so yesterday!
Now, if you are one of these lucky 3.5 million Fibre Connect premises, you might already be eligible to upgrade your FTTN or FTTC connection to Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) for free* with Tangerine! If you are not currently eligible for a free* fibre upgrade, don’t despair. NBN Co has suggested that by the end of 2023, up to 8 million premises in total will be eligible to access a Fibre Upgrade. In the meantime, you can check out our available NBN plans here.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF UPGRADING TO FRESH FIBRE?
The ultrafast broadband speeds, of course!
For starters, an FTTP Fibre Upgrade will give you access to Typical Evening Speeds of around 205mbps on our XXXL Speed Boost Plan (you may or may not know that evenings are peak usage, so with traditional tech you are competing with a helluva a lot more users for bandwidth!). A download speed of 205mbps is more than double the maximum speed of even the best current FTTN connection.
This could be a game changer for anyone currently trying to work & / or study from home, while the rest of the household are gaming, doing homework or streaming shows!
On top of ultrafast speeds, the removal of the old copper telephone network creates much better stability, meaning fewer dropouts, and a greater, much more reliable connection.
